Dyno Tuning Under the Curve
Tuning under the curve. In this example, I will increase the torque output by 75% from just changing ignition timing at a fixed load. This shows why a tunable crank trigger ignition system can give you so much advantage. Obviously, there is much more to this and I didn't even touch the AFR at all.     so I guess you aren't using a rear bumper? if you are going to install a bumper, it seems to me that it would be more work removing the bumper than it is to just pull the motor the regular way. as it stands, I can change a bug motor in 45 minutes

    Tuning under the curve is EXTREMELY important for an engine that will see time other than full throttle. Case in point, I had an old 1991 Chevy Cavalier station wagon with a mild turbocharged 3.1L V6, and a Haltec standalone ECU. It was tuned by a VERY popular import tuner in north Dallas. The car was getting 16 mpg!! I found that timing was locked in at 10 degrees and the air/fuel ratio hovered at around 12.0:1!!! WAY too rich and not enough timing. After I tuned the car, gas mileage went up to 25 mpg, the car gained hp and torque on the dyno, it was a LOT easier to start when it was cold, and it didn’t pop and buck at low rpm’s. Tuning under the curve is VERY important!

      This is EFI, so there aren't any jets. I also don't know what is in this engine, just what I have added on top :)

      A stock 1600 is usually 60hp.

    What are the specs on the build? Heads, pistons, compression ratio, cam....etc

      Actually, I don't know. The car was delivered to me with this engine that had Weber's. Since the engine comes out for EFI install, I find it easier to do the initial tuning on the dyno instead of on the road. I do know it's a 1.9l.

    Is the 8 psi attained with a pulley swap on the supercharger ? If so what boost was made with the stock blower pulley ?

      The stock pulley made about 5psi, I have 2 other sizes. One for 8 and another that made 13 :)

    Few years ago I built a 2054 with big valve/ported heads and an FK8. That thing idled like a stocker but when those straight cuts made their presence felt, it sounded like a big block Chevy on it's way to 7k. This engine sounds great.

      A few thoughts. Does it have flaps in the shroud? Why not put on larger collectors and a J-tube? Surely the heater boxes are creating a big restriction.

    A friend is thinking of turbo charging his Corvair. I'm thinking he'd be better off putting 2 that's right Two of these little blowers on it. Maybe rive them off the fan with a ring and 2 pinion gears. One for each bank it seems like it would be so much easier to make happen.

    Here because i love flat engines but this was a bit sad i swapped a honda gl1500 engine in my mgb and it put down 110hp 130tq weights way less and revs higher without boost 😂 this is cool but maybe start with something that has nice heads to begin with.

    We used to race the shit outta these in Mexico. Swapping out motor and trans from VW buses 🚌…. Fun fact EVERY old body style beetle was made in Puebla Mexico up until 2004. You can literally get a 2004 beetle that looks just like this one and really the only difference is basically the fuel injection and the radio. You can get a super tricked out bug from Mexico for 5-6k…. Not sure what the import fees would be to make it legal I. The USA but it would probably still be less than half what doing it in the states would cost
